Inspired by the idea that good planets are hard to find, Stark Mountain is committed to keeping our company's environmental footprint as small as possible.
We have installed a 54 KW solar array on a hillside about 10 minutes from our shop. It produces almost all of the energy we need to meet the electrical requirements of our business, including power tools, computers and lights.
Our shop and offices are heated with the sawdust and scrap wood that we generate on site. A pelletizer compresses the sawdust into briquettes and we stockpile scrap wood throughout the year. When winter comes, a high efficiency wood furnace keeps us toasty on even the coldest days.
In 2006, we established a bike-to-work initiative to increase the well-being of our staff and reduce the environmental impact of commuting. Since its inception, our employees have logged a total of 75,000 miles cycling to and from work. Using EPA calculations, this has saved 35 tons of carbon emissions and 169 pounds of volatile organic compounds from being discharged into the atmosphere.
